Ignorance is Bliss!

I was at a temple the other day.

As is the custom and a kind of meditation, we go around the diety multiple times – circumambulation!

I noticed a group of kids entering the temple. Playing and laughing, they started going around the diety as well.

Watching us all, quietly, was a moth that was resting on the adjacent wall.

Every time you went around, one would walk about a meter away from the moth.

The moth was camouflaged well against the wall. It was one of those things which once seen, you couldn’t unsee!

Pulling and pushing each other playfully, the kids continued their fun religious action. Thrice they went around. In the beginning of the fourth round, the youngest in the group noticed the moth.

Aieeeeeeeeeeeee…… Went the shout! He gesticulated wildly, trying to point out the moth to his siblings and friends.

All hell broke loose and the band of brothers hastily disbanded. Every man for himself was the unspoken motto now!

Fear took over, religion stayed behind and the kids left the place!

Of course, all of this made no difference to the moth. It continued at its spot, oblivious to the pandemonium.

The moth was there when the kids came in. The moth was there when the kids were having fun. What had actually changed to bring about a change in scene?

Ignorance can be bliss in some situations! There are somethings that one really does not need to know. Knowing them, however, can result in unnecessary turbulences of the mind. Hence, the phrase – Ignorance is bliss!
